Confess it all at College Confessional

June 4, 2009

Anonymous at confesses,

I feel so lost and confused right now. I just recently switched majors from
pharmacy to nursing. Also, I thought that I wanted to become a doctor so after
getting a BS in nursing I could go to medicine school. But lately I’ve been
thinking about why I chose nursing and medicine and I don’t think I want to
pursue either.
I also think that a lot of the reasons why I wanted a career in the medical
field is because of my parents. My mom is a nurse and my dad is a lab
technician. And most of my mom’s family is in the medical field. I feel like
I’m being pressured into going into the medical field, especially nursing. The
problem is I don’t really want to become a nurse and I’m not even sure I want
to become a doctor anymore. But if I were to choose another major, I wouldn’t
really know what to pick. Nothing seems to stand out and I don’t think I have a
passion for anything. My parents are really pressuring to me to go through with
nursing or something medical.
The part that stressing me out is that I don’t even know what I want. I don’t
know what I wanna do for the rest of my life. It’s so scary not knowing what to
do or where you’re going to end up. And I feel so forced into nursing because
like I said I don’t know what else I would wanna do. I feel like there’s some
kind of time limit on trying to find out what you want to do for the rest of
your life and if you pass the the limit then it’s too late for you. And I’m
afraid that it will be too late for me when I know what I wanna do.

There’s NO time limit to figure out what you want to do. My neighbour’s mom ended up going back to school at 40 years old to become a nurse (she got married when she got pregnant at 20). So it’s never too late to do something.

Now, about your parents. If pharmacy (your first choice) appeals more to you, then go for it. You can still make a damn good living in that field as well. But it’s not about that. It’s about doing what YOU want to do. Think about it this way - how good of a nurse or doctor will you really be if your heart isn’t in it?? This may sound morbid, but what about when you get married and have children of your own, and your parents pass away - then what?? It will just be YOUR life then, so doing what they want will be pointless and you will only resent them for it. Your parents are pressuring you because they want you to SUCCEED, but that doesn’t mean you have to sacrifice your happiness.

Try taking courses in various fields (like if you take nursing, you can still take philosophy courses, art courses, some pharmacy courses, other science ones). This is the whole point of school - to figure out what you like. Or do a double major, major/minor, or something like that if you can. You can even take a general science major (I took Biology), and maybe do a Masters and go into lab/research work too. There are a lot of options out there with Science degrees, you can work at lots of various places. Just remember, it’s about what YOU want. You can always figure that out in time… just make sure you are firm with your parents and tell them you need to figure it out yourself. They might complain, but in the end they will support whatever you choose.

    Oh.

My heart goes out to you, baby.

I agree with the first respondant. Firstly — no-one should be nursing or applying themselves to medicine if their heart is not in it. Healers need to be of solid heart and mind if they are truly going to make a positive impact in the lives of those in need. It needs to be something that sings to them, drives them like nothing else, because the field of healthcare is unrelenting, all-encompassing, and requires 110% of those providing care.

Do what drives YOU, sweetheart. Seriously. At the end of the day, at the end of your life, who is going to be there, living with the decisions you have chosen?

    You.

    It’s only you, baby.

    Live YOUR life.

Are you the same person that went through the route of becoming a nurse in order to go to med school?

Anyway, I know how you feel because I’m going through a similar situation. I don’t have any advice to give you due that fact, however, I just wanted you to know that you aren’t the only one feeling this way. The last paragraph of your confession hit me hard and I had to keep myself from crying because it describes how I feel to a T.

It’s never too late, guys!!!! I forgot to mention that I have a 45 year old friend in medical school right now. He decided later on life he wanted to become a doctor. Don’t feel pressured to find what you want right away. So many people are working dead-end jobs that they hate - do you really want to be just another statistic?? Working a desk job just to get through the day?? Of course not. Just take your time and try different things. My boyfriend didn’t finish high school, but after trying various jobs, he realized (through a commission sales job), that he really had a talent for sales and now he’s going into real estate and wants to become a realtor. But he didn’t learn that from his mom pushing him - he learned it by experiencing life and just trying different things. You will figure out what you are meant to do, in the meantime, just take various courses or take a vacation if you need a break…there’s really no rush…
